‘Mobilegeddon’…Is Your Website Responsive?

Posted by on May 9, 2015 in Design

In case you haven’t heard, Google has just made a massive change to how it serves up search results. As of Tuesday, April 21, the company has “expand[ed] its use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal.”

In other words, websites that are optimized to show up well on smartphones, tablets, and other mobile devices will get a significant boost in the search rankings. And those that aren’t mobile-friendly? Well, Google hasn’t said it in so many words, but they can prepare to get left behind in the dust.

This is a big deal. Before the past Tuesday, your prospects may have been squinting at your mobile-unfriendly website on their smartphones. But now, your company may not show up in the search rankings at all (on mobile devices OR regular computers) if its website isn’t fully responsive. And you can’t engage with an audience that doesn’t know you exist!

Google has helpfully provided a page that lets you test whether or not your website is mobile-friendly – just type in your website URL and let the tool do its thing. If you get the green light, fantastic! And if not, there are a couple things you can do:

  1. Contact us ASAP.
  2. Check out some of the tools available online (such as the WPtouch plugin for WordPress sites).

Whatever you do, though, put this near the top of your to-do list. We know it’s already overflowing, but this is a biggie.
